This idea for this piece began when Mrs. Lorax and I were discussing the Grateful Dead’s lore and logo. “Instead of Steal Your Face, Heal Your Face!”

What I said

Steal your face right off your head

Three weeks ago I started working on the idea her words had smoothly and beautifully popped into my head. Some kind of ancient Azteca cuneiform, or Mexica hieroglyphics, that only someone who’d been in the miraculous medicine zone would easily notice; their having had the normally thick veil between mystic vision and blindness lifted as if it were never there.

To fully experience our mortality and our immortal Spirit as the same and one. To learn how to pray before we die, not in pious want of life after death, but in awe of life before it. To see that so often we don’t see, we barely look. Those people would be able to see the words, and therefore the message in the design.

And this unveiling first happened to, and for me 44 years ago tonight, which happens to be the day I completed work on Heal Your Face. And by this, it is a commemoration of all that has happened to me since that powerful night, when I first learned that medicine works in ways beyond our understanding of how a universe might manage to put itself together so that we can be together. And Creator provides ways that as minuscule as our mortality may be, healing is possible, and likely through prayer.

And since it’s that way, we can use medicine to promote healing in others and in the larger world that provides all of our needs. It was that night that I truly committed my consciousness to the only real path left to me- to be grateful that I wasn’t dead. It’s really the only way to live.

Since that time, with much mistake, adventure, disappointment, challenge, love, and miracles… I’m still here. Congratulations to myself.

The abilities I have that I can use to share my own healing have had everything to do with my “job” as the Peyote Lorax, to speak for and make a way for the medicine. To stay with it so it stays with us. That’s what we’re doing at Morning Star Conservancy and yes, this is a fundraising pitch if you will.

We need help. Our Seedling Sanctuary is a beautiful hope for an abundant future and I and it need your help. Our budget is in a transitional phase and we need to bridge the expense gap into the new year. I am selling this commemorative Heal Your Face piece as a testament to my own healing and to help the medicine. Please share this as a way of helping us purchase materials needed for new transplants and the continuation of our sanctuary greenhouse thank you.
