Home Seedling Sanctuary Parts Guide

Here is a parts guide for assembling your own seed chamber at home. You might customize your own situation according to cost, ease of access of supplies, or other factors. However, this setup is the same one I use in Morning Star Conservancy’s seedling sanctuary, and is easily expandable according to need. Total cost for all items listed = $679.19, shipping not included.

Grow Chamber

Veg Trug Mini-Greenhouse- $179, shipping not included

This Veg Trug unit is the best value I have found for cost and solid design. Sturdy and durable. Lower cost wire frame units available on Amazon and elsewhere will eventually cost more because of their flimsy construction. Zipper opening allows easy venting for heat and humidity control Replaceable clear poly and open mesh covers also available. Available online here.

Planting Trays

10 x 20 Heavy Duty Trays- $15.70 per 10 pack, 20 total needed = $31.40 total, shipping not included

The Veg Trug greenhouse holds 8 of these 1020 flats, 2 per shelf. You need a total of 16 as the ones without holes are inserted into the ones without, as illustrated in photo above. They are available at Greenhouse Megastore in 10 packs, so you will end up with 2 extra insert trays with holes, and 2 extra trays without holes. Make sure and specify 2 ten packs, one with, and one without holes here. These trays can germinate up to 1,500 seeds each. 4 to 6 months following germination, you will transfer seedlings into a 72-cell propagation tray, which perfectly fit into the 1020 no-hole trays discussed above.

72 cell propagation tray- $14.30 per 10 pack, one 10 pack required = $14.30 total, shipping not included

Available at Greenhouse Megastore here.

Humidity Domes

Humidity Dome- $45.15 for 10 pack = $45.15 total, shipping not included

These covers fit the 1020 trays and provide extra humidity during the sensitive first several weeks of germination and growth. Available at Greenhouse Megastore here.

Lights

Sunblaster 24″ Prism Lens, 6400K 24W LED-HO Strip Light- $51.38 (Amazon) 4 needed = $205.52, shipping not included

Just because everyone’s situation varies, (various degrees of ambient light exposure I am recommending 4 lights per unit, one installed under each shelf so that it illuminates the shelf below. The top shelf’s light will be in center of the space above, as there is no shelf above it. The 24 inch Sunblaster unit fits just right.

Light for lower shelf installed on bottom of upper shelf

These lights available on Amazon here

Thermometer/Hygrometer

Thermometer/Hygrometer combo- $8.99 – $10 on Amazon, shipping not included

Monitor your temperature and humidity using a combo meter, widely available, such as this unit on Amazon.

Water Sprayer

It’s best to buy a quality sprayer. The one I use is this 2 gallon Husqrvana unit. Available on Amazon and elsewhere.

2 gallon pump sprayer- $49.99, shipping not included

pH Meter

Best results occur with water adjusted to pH 5.5. Most groundwater water in the west is well above Ph 7. I use this high quality pH meter available on Amazon as it lasts many years with proper care, making it a better value than cheaper pH pens with much shorter service lives.

BlueLab pH pen- $109.99 on Amazon

You will need to check your water source before ordering a buffering agent if required, either a pH up or pH down solution, depending. (Adjusting the pH of your water is recommended but not required.)

pH Up & Down- $18.99 on Amazon, shipping not included
